I'm interested in the development of discussion- and writing-workshop-based teaching practices by pre-service secondary English teachers. Because these teaching practices invite the multiple social, cultural, and technological practices of students and teachers into classroom interactions, they involve unexpectedness. The unexpectedness of these practices is often difficult for teachers to learn to facilitate. My research addresses how discursive interactions during discussion and around writing frame these activities, providing unexpected affordances and constraints for teachers.
